Reflection #5

What have I learned so far in Culture Diversity?

This course teach me  a lot of about cultures in different countries. I have learned that I have to treat people the way that I don’t make them feel different from the other people. A new  vocabulary  I have learned in this course that I have never heard of them before, some of these words are (discrimination, tolerance, conduct). I have also learned that in the country you will find so many cultures. These cultures spread around the country making their own life and trying to communicate with the country they are living with. That’s why a country with lots of diverse cultures in it you will have so many fights and so many racist people. In my course that I’m studying I have learned that we have to deal with the people in my country as they are really part of us and we have to treat them as they are one of us. Culture Diversity is a subject that is teaching the people the stereotype of the people you deal with. We have also start using the power point to present the work and the reports we do so that we can present them to our colleagues and we can show them what we have done. After all the things we done in the class we transfer them to a webpage that we add our work to it. The blogger is a way to communicate with our teacher in the course and a way to tell him that we have done the work.

Part 3: Cambodia Customs and Values 

Objective: To understand some similarities between Emirati and Cambodian Culture

Task: Compare Cambodian and Emirati values

Highlight in yellow all the values that are similar to Emirati values 

A. Traditional Cambodian values include a strong family identity and loyalty

B. Cambodian-born people have a respect for culture and older people.

C. Cambodian families tend to be very private and reluctant to discuss family issues or conflict with non-family members 

D. Stoicism is a highly valued Cambodian character trait, reducing the tendency to complain about their health or services they are receiving 

E. Modesty, particularly for women, is very important

F. Visitors to Cambodian-born people’s homes are often expected to remove their shoes, however they might not ask 

G. Accepting of food and refreshments when offered may break down barriers, open communication and build trust 

H. Cambodian-born people regard touching people on the head or pointing feet or shoes at them as offensive.

I. Cambodians consider it impolite to make eye contact with someone who is older or considered a superior

J. Cambodians have a tendency not to question instructions or authority 

K. ‘Yes’ may be an ambiguous response to a question or request, and does not necessarily indicate agreement. Reponses that might mean ‘no’ include; no response, changing the subject, or statements such as ‘it’s OK’ or ‘no problem’ or even an unconvincing ‘yes’ 

L. It may take time to develop working relationships, trust and rapport 

M. Loud or over-familiar behavior towards others is generally not favoured. 

N. Cambodians tend to avoid showing anger or getting involved in confrontation 

O. Cambodians prefer to be addressed using their correct title. For example Mr, Mrs and Dr 

P. Women traditionally retain their own family names on marriage or they may have two surnames. Cambodian names are traditionally written with the surname first, followed by the given name. 

Q. Cambodians may not recognise their names if they are pronounced incorrectly 

R. Cambodians may not always address people by their name



Comparison between UAE & Cambodia:

- Our culture and the Cambodia have many similar things that contact us together Our culture make us respect the people who older than us, Cambodians people too. The Cambodians families have a strong loyalty, they respect each other and they help each other. Also in UAE, the families have special feeling to each other and always being together, in one world the two culture have a strong loyalty. Women modesty, build trust, and respecting, all these features are important for the two cultures.

  

Part 4: The Beauty, Diversity and Poverty of Cambodia 

Objective: To introduce Cambodia to students and to compare Emirati and Cambodian lifestyles

Tasks

1. View a photo gallery, a PowerPoint presentation, and a video from Cambodia DONE

2. Discuss :
A-The photo of statues, because these statues made me feel how hard Cambodia life is. Thanks to Allah for having houses, thanks to Allah for having schools, thanks to Allah for having work, and thanks for Allah for the good life that we have.
B-often 7 days a week, and typically earn $50 to $150 per month

3. Write a refection comparing your life to that of Cambodians :

The most important reason of this problem is the revenue, Cambodia have no revenue to eat. The solution for is to send groups of Emiraties volunteers to help the people there to stand on there feet again, and build the society supports for them like schools and roods.If we did not discovered the oil I think our life will be like Cambodians people, but the one different will be the deserts.

Objective: To introduce Cambodia’s amazing architectural wonders and consider the rise and fall of cultures

I think Angkor Wat looks so interesting to me because it made me wonder how the old Cambodians did build the Angkor Wat without using building machines? Angkor Wat Built between 9 and 14 century for the king of Cambodia who had a strong power, some researcher think Angkor Wat took 30 years to complete, but the most interesting thing is how the Cambodians built the Angkor Wat? No one knows. Cambodia fall down because battle that was with Kingdom of Siem.

Reflection #4

Gap year

What is a gab year ?

It’s a year  that the student  tack it  when he graduate from the last year from school and before  join the university   to discover himself and get experience and learn about what they want to do about their career so they can easily choose what course they want to enroll in when they enter the university instead of studying something they are not passionate about and it help them to relax for a while. The advantages of the gap year helped many students to be independent and it teaches them more about themselves, learning what their strength are and through that they are able to figure out what they want to do for the rest of the their life. i believe that Emirati students already started to go for a gab year and if i had the chance i will not chose one country because I wont to learn everything from every were I will take what I need and leave the other things.

a. Stereotyping : judging  someone without knowing him / judging entire group of people based on what some of them may do.
 
b. Prejudice : your feeling toward  individuals based on group of perceptions.
c. Bias : not neutral .
 
d. Discrimination : Any action that denies opportunities to a person on the basis of their race, gender, age, religion .

a. Stereotyping : All  sudanis are lazy
 
b. Prejudice :i dont want to work with this guy he will let me do all the work alone.

2.      Describe the experiment.  Blue eyes people are better than brown eyes they were treated differently then they exchanged the experiment

3.      What were the results? 1st experiment : brown eyes felt insulted . 2nd experiment : blue eyes felt the same when they exchanged the experiment . 

4.      How successful do you believe it was? they felt happy when they knew that respecting others is better than judging them by color .

Reflection #3

Discrimination and Prejudice

After I saw the video in YouTube about the brown eyes  and I see how the teacher  can change their mind in one class. That really what happen in our world? I'm not biased to a certain class of people, but I like to be near the group were I can get a benefit from them.

Unfortunately, her in my country  30% of the people Judge you by the opinion of others, and society's perception of you by your gender, or your race, the color of your skin.

I have a situation with one of my friend , I am Emirate  citizen of Persian origin, but I was born here, as well as my parents and my grandfather. One day intensified discussion between me and my friend on the information, at the  in the end he told me what you realize you are just Aimi (Persian) that is one example of discrimination . Most of the people  also me stereotype that all Sudanese people are lazy  and the most of the Syrian people are excluded you and the all the Egyptian are intelligent.   

    I hope that we can fix these big problem because one hand cant clapping .
